Hosted by Code for Canada and the Open Data Society of BC.

Celebrate International Open Data Day by participating in Vancouver’s Open Data Day Hackathon on March 5, 2016!

Mashing up one or more Open Data sets, create a meaningful open data app or visualization that citizens can use, creating a prototype to be demoed at the end of the day. A competition panel will vote for the best prototypes under six different categories.

Big Data Hackathon in Vancouver - Microsoft

Date / Time: April 18 - April 19

The Microsoft Big Data Hackathon is your opportunity to hack for a good cause. Assemble a team, learn, share, and make new friends as you use big data technologies to solve real-world problems. Big OpenData from around BC will be available.

Data will include Big Open Data from ThinkDataWorks at namara.io including datesets from Vancouver and BC.

There will be $2,000 in prizes for winning teams under these two categories:

  • Data Modeling* – a team should produce a model to prove or disprove a relationship with the data; and
  • Data Visualization - a team should create a visualization to represent the data.

Or Community Empowerment for Progress Organization in South Sudan, that is looking at how to leverage social media to challenge the escalation of violence in South Sudan. Or Aid Watch Palestine which aims to made aid to Palestine more transparent and accountable to Palestinians. Or you can help the teams at PeaceGeeks resdesign their websites or at Random Hacks of Kindness to migrate their content to a new site. The Vancouver {CODE} 2015 Roadshow stops will bring together Open Data enthusiasts, Academic representatives, potential hackathon participants as well as members of the VC community and interested media.

The evening will consist of a series of speakers and networking.

Open Government Tour 2014 - August 25 and 26

Open government advocate and co-founder of CitizenBridge, Richard Pietro is riding on a motorcycle across Canada to ignite the open government conversation. The journey covers over 20,000km in 90 days with 20 stops to engage the local community on open government. The goal is to raise awareness about the movement to open up government via open data and get citizens more civically engaged -- building trust between government and its citizens.

Guests from the local government, technology, industry, and not-for-profit sector will be talking like real human beings about Open Government, Open Data, and Open Source. The style is more conversational in nature and not only involves the guests, but the audience in an engaging discussion about our current society.
